by Charles Rice Goff III & Walls Of Genius
1 Beautiful Music
2 Mathod In Medness
3 Capstan Of Industry
4 Nova Express
5 Lodovico Cement
Generalities:
The compositions on this album all were made by modifying portions of a recording of improvised music made by Walls Of Genius (WOG) on November 7th, 2014, in Boulder, Colorado. The length of this recording was 26:06 minutes. Unmodified portions of this improvisation are included on the WOG cassette album: "Paleolithic" (released by Kassette Kult, 2015) and the WOG CDR album: "Paleolithic Rejects" (self-released by WOG, 2015). The participants in the recording session were:
Evan Cantor: bass, drums, saxophone, prepared materials, keyboards, guitar
Little Fyodor: percussion, synthesizer, slide whistle
Ed Fowler: electric guitar
A prerecorded improvisation made by Charles Rice Goff III was incorporated "live" into the WOG recording session. This improvisation featured electronic guitar, sound effects, and digital loops, and was recorded on July 7th, 2014, in Kansas City, Kansas.
Specifics:
In January, 2015, Goff altered the WOG recording in various ways and achieved five results. The processes that Goff used to produce each result are detailed below:
1) Beautiful Music (4:18)
Elements: 8 edits of approximately 8 seconds each from the WOG recording .
Process: Each edit was converted by Cool Edit Pro "Making Beautiful Music" software to conform to a single (the same exact) phrase of original notation. This process transformed each 8-second edit into a unique, but similar, 49-second recording. The eight 49-second recordings were then pasted together in sequence with a Cool Edit Pro multitrack recording program.
2) Mathod In Medness (8:55)
Elements: 6 edits from the WOG recording, each recorded onto continuous loop cassette tapes of various lengths. Two stereo cassette players, plugged direct-line into a stereo mixer. Two portable cassette players with small external speakers. Two microphones plugged directly into the stereo mixer (to record the output of the small external speakers on the portable cassette decks).
Process: The tapes were all manually mixed together "live." Recording levels were varied and the tapes were randomly switched between tape players during the process.
3) Capstan Of Industry (10:53)
Elements: Entire (26:06) WOG recording.
Process: The recording was played "live" through a cassette deck, plugged directly into a Korg R3 Vocoder/Synthesizer. The synthesizer was output into a Boss Loop Duplicator. The live playing of the cassette was modified by a variety of vocoder and synthesizer effects, keyboard triggers, and active use of the loop duplicator. A portion of this live performance was edited out to produce the recording presented here.
4) Nova Express (4:30)
Elements: 4 edits from the WOG recording, various lengths.
Process: Each edit was duplicated various times and placed at regular intervals on the grid of a multitrack session of Cool Edit Pro software. The edits were panned to achieve various stereo combinations. The grid of edits was blended together to form a single recording. Pitch effects were added at the beginning and end.
5) Lodovico Cement (28:43)
Elements: 8 edits from the WOG recording, various lengths.
Process: A variety of digital sound effects were applied to each edit. The modified edits were placed on the grid of a multitrack session of Cool Edit Pro software, then blended into a single recording.
Cover Art Concept And Execution by Evan Cantor.
This album is also available in CDR and Cassette formats.
